David B. Hicks is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Stony Brook University. His research spans ritual, belief, oral literature, and kinship, with regional expertise in East Timor, Indonesia, and broader Southeast Asia.
- Education: D. Phil., University of Oxford (1973); Ph.D., University of London (1971)
- Teaching: Courses include ANT 102 (What Makes Us Human?), ANT 200 (Southeast Asia Studies), ANT 351 (Comparative Religion), ANT 354 (Family/Kinship/Marriage), and ANT 401 (Social/Cultural Anthropology Problems)
- Research: Conducted 21 months of fieldwork in East Timor (1966–present) and 5 months in western Flores, Indonesia (1983, 1986). Current focus on East Timor's politics (1974–1975) and future Fulbright fieldwork plans (2005). Published four books and numerous papers.
