David B. Carter is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis. Previously, he taught at Princeton University and Pennsylvania State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Rochester (2009). His research focuses on international relations, particularly conflict and security dynamics, and the intersection of security with international political economy. Key areas include historical border legacies, territorial disputes, and the impact of terrain on civil conflict. He currently co-edits World Politics and serves on editorial boards for International Organization, American Political Science Review, and International Studies Quarterly.
Research interests emphasize how border institutions and management shape state interactions, including border walls and historical border effects on trade, investment, and political behavior. He also examines sub-state groups' territorial claims and their role in civil violence.
