John J. Chin is an Assistant Professor at the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Strategy & Technology (CMIST), affiliated with Carnegie Mellon University. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame, an M.P.P. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University. Prior to his current role, he served as a research coordinator and postdoctoral fellow at CMU’s Institute for Politics and Strategy.
- Research Interests: International relations, comparative politics, technologies of rebellion, authoritarian politics, comparative democratization, and forecasting political instability.
- Teaching: Regularly teaches courses on International Relations, Diplomacy and Statecraft, Nonviolent Conflict and Revolution, and The Future of Democracy. Intermittently teaches International Human Rights, Civil-Military Relations, and Collaborative Research in Political Science.
- Scientific Awards:
- Best Historical Materials (American Library Association, 2022-2023) for Historical Dictionary of Modern Coups D’état (2022).
- Publications: His work focuses on coup dynamics, authoritarian power centralization, nonviolent revolution, and U.S. Africa policy trends.
