David B Corry, M.D., is a Professor and Fulbright Endowed Chair in Pathology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He holds positions in the Departments of Medicine and Pathology & Immunology, with affiliations at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research focuses on immunology, allergy, asthma mechanisms, fungal pathogenesis, and autoimmune diseases linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema.
Education: M.D. from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (1988), followed by residency and fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Duke University and University of California, San Francisco. Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Research Interests: Investigates T cell biology, airway physiology, proteases in immunity, fungal infections (e.g., Candida albicans), and Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology. Develops therapies targeting allergic responses, autoimmunity, and lung inflammation. Key contributions include linking fungal proteases to asthma exacerbations and identifying autoimmunity in cigarette smoke-induced emphysema.
Grants: Receives NIH funding for studies on fungal asthma pathogenesis (R01 AI135803), miRNA regulation in emphysema (R01 HL140398), and immune mechanisms in allergic inflammation (I01BX004828). Additional VA-ORD support for molecular dissection of miRNAs in asthma.
Publications: Over 200 peer-reviewed articles, including landmark studies on platelet-mediated TH2/T17 polarization in fungal immunity, microglia roles in Candida cerebritis, and miRNA-driven TH17 emphysema. Recent work explores SARS-CoV-2 immune responses, long-COVID biomarkers, and antifungal therapies for airway mycosis.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Center for Translational Research on Inflammatory Diseases (CTRID) and collaborates with the Baylor Vaccine & Treatment Evaluation Unit. Active in translational research linking immunology discoveries to clinical therapies for allergic, infectious, and autoimmune diseases.
