David Arkell is the Director of Business Development and part of the Faculty of Business and Law at Anglia Ruskin University, based in Cambridge. His work bridges academia and industry, focusing on sustainable development and strategic partnerships. He holds a PhD in corporate strategy with specialization in organizational emotional dynamics, alongside Masters degrees in civil engineering, transport planning, management, and marketing.
Professionally, Dr. Arkell served as Head of Service at Cambridgeshire County Council, securing £27m in EU funding for smart cities initiatives. He founded SmartLIFE, an international initiative promoting modern construction and renewable energy, with centers in Cambridge, Hamburg, and Malmö. Currently, he leads a multi-million pound enterprise and skills park in Cambridge for clean-tech and environmental innovators.
Academically, he supervises PhD students at Anglia Ruskin’s Faculty of Business and Law, teaches in Cambridge University’s Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment program, and acts as an external examiner for engineering and architecture dissertations. His research emphasizes strategic partnerships between industry, government, and education.
Dr. Arkell has secured external funding from the Intellectual Property Office and Smart City demonstrator agencies, demonstrating expertise in leveraging cross-sector collaborations for impactful projects.
