Professor David Andersson is a leading academic in Neuroscience at King's College London, affiliated with the Wolfson Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre (SPaRC) within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. His primary focus is on understanding how sensory neurons control pain and nociception, particularly in chronic conditions like fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). He investigates TRP ion channels and their interactions with G-protein coupled receptors, contributing to drug discovery and pain management strategies.
Key affiliations include the Clinical Diagnostics Development Unit (CDDU) and collaborations with institutions such as the Karolinska Institute and Eli Lilly. His research integrates translational studies, exploring mechanisms of chemotherapeutic-induced pain (e.g., oxaliplatin) and autoantibody-mediated pain syndromes. Andersson has received notable awards, including the Sir Jules Thorn Award for Biomedical Research (2023) and the KCL/London Law Trust Medal (2009).
Research interests span neuroinflammation, pain modulation, and autoimmune pain pathways. Over 49 publications highlight his work on TRP channels, autoantibodies in fibromyalgia, and novel therapeutic targets. His lab (Wolfson SPaRC) emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to pain science, with ongoing projects funded by the MRC and industry partners.
Notable collaborations include work with Prof. Stuart Bevan (KCL), Dr. Andreas Goebel (University of Liverpool), and Prof. Camilla Svensson (Karolinska Institute). Public engagement includes media contributions on non-opioid pain relief and fibromyalgia research.
