David A. Hodell is the Woodwardian Professor of Geology and Director of the Godwin Laboratory for Palaeoclimate Research at the University of Cambridge, where he is also a Fellow of Clare College. His research focuses on paleoclimate reconstruction using marine and lacustrine sediments, with specializations in millennial-scale climate variability, ice sheet dynamics, and human-environment interactions. He leads projects in the North and South Atlantic Oceans, Mesoamerica, and India, including drilling initiatives like IODP Expedition 397 on the Iberian Margin and the ICDP Lake Peten-Itza project in Guatemala. His work integrates geochemical analyses, sediment core studies, and climate modeling to understand past climate systems and their societal impacts.
- Key roles: Woodwardian Professor, Godwin Lab Director, Clare College Fellow
- Research themes: Paleoclimatology, ocean-atmosphere linkages, Quaternary climate dynamics
- Fieldwork: IODP/ICDP drilling programs, lake sediment coring in tropical regions
- Notable projects: Iberian Margin climate records, Southern Ocean carbon cycling, Maya civilization climate context
His publications analyze millennial climate cycles, water isotopes in minerals, and the role of ice sheets in abrupt climate shifts. Collaborations span paleoceanography, geochemistry, and archaeology, emphasizing interdisciplinary climate science.
