Dr Darren Wong is a Postdoctoral Scientist in the Division of Ecology and Evolution at the Australian National University (ANU). His research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying plant specialization, particularly in orchids and grapevine, with emphasis on specialized metabolites, transcriptional regulation, and stress responses. He investigates how plants adapt to environmental challenges through genetic and metabolic pathways.
Key research areas include: plant genetics, molecular biology, specialized metabolites (e.g., floral volatiles, terpenes), transcription factor networks, orchid-fungal symbiosis, and abiotic stress tolerance. His work integrates genomics, transcriptomics, and metabolomics to uncover regulatory mechanisms.
Recent studies explore cold tolerance in grapevine via VvbHLH036 transcription factors, parasitism mechanisms in Escobedia grandiflora, and evolutionary drivers of floral color variation. He leads projects on orchid phylogenomics and flower color evolution, funded by ANU grants.
Collaborations span international teams studying plant-pollinator interactions, metabolic pathways, and symbiotic relationships. His work bridges fundamental biology with agricultural applications, aiming to enhance crop resilience and understand evolutionary processes.
