Darren Valenta

Dr. Darren Valenta serves as Assistant Professor in the Communication Studies and Theatre Art Department at Concordia College, joining the faculty in Fall 2021. He directs the Speech and Debate Program and was appointed Director of Core Curriculum and First-Year Experience in January 2025.

Education:

• Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale
• M.A. in Communication Studies, West Chester University of Pennsylvania
• B.A. in Communication Arts, Linfield College, McMinnville, Oregon

His research examines stand-up comedy's role in mental health discourse, particularly anxiety and depression, through performance studies and autoethnographic methods. He investigates critical communication pedagogy frameworks and cultural subversion in comedic narratives, with scholarly contributions to communication theory and mental health representation.

Dr. Valenta leads institutional initiatives through the Speech and Debate Program and Core Curriculum oversight, shaping academic programming and student development at Concordia College.
