Dr. Darren Thiel is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Essex. He holds a BSc, MSc, and PhD from the London School of Economics, where his doctoral thesis was awarded the Robert McKenzie prize for outstanding academic performance. His research focuses on social class, economic sociology, migration, policing, terrorism, criminal justice, and social policy.
His publications explore themes including welfare reform impacts, homicide victim experiences, and labor market inequalities. Recent projects investigate families of homicide victims where no suspect has been convicted and welfare reform in Essex. His research methodology incorporates ethnographic fieldwork and policy analysis.
Key awards include the Robert McKenzie Prize and being a finalist for the British Sociological Association's Philip Abrams Memorial Prize for his book 'Builders'. He has secured research funding from the Technology Strategy Board and Colne Housing Society Ltd. for welfare impact mapping projects.
