Darren Halpin

Professor Darren Halpin is a leading scholar in Political Science at the Australian National University (ANU), holding the title of Professor of Political Science within the College of Arts and Social Sciences. He has held tenured positions in the UK and Denmark and currently serves as Associate Dean (Research) in the College of Arts and Social Sciences. His research focuses on interest groups, political lobbying, and representation, with a comparative lens on Australia, the US, and the UK. He co-founded the Policy Advocacy Lab, bridging academic research and policy practice.

Halpin’s work explores organized interests, including think tanks, corporations, and advocacy groups, and their role in policy-making and democratic representation. He has authored influential books such as Groups, Democracy and Representation (2010) and The Organization of Political Interest Groups (2014). His recent collaboration with Anthony J. Nownes on The New Entrepreneurial Advocacy (2021) examines Silicon Valley’s political influence. His research has been funded by prestigious bodies like the Australian Research Council and the UK Economic and Social Research Council.

Halpin teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on interest groups and convenes the Research Internship program for Social Sciences students.
