Patrick Halpin is a Professor of Marine Geospatial Ecology at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, with a secondary appointment at Duke Kunshan University. He leads the Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab, focusing on geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and ecosystem-based management. His research addresses marine conservation, biodiversity observation networks, and the impacts of human activities on oceans. Halpin holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia (1995).
Key affiliations include leadership roles in international programs like OBIS, GOBI, and the Google Oceans Advisory Council. His work integrates geospatial data to address conservation challenges, such as marine mammal distribution modeling and offshore wind energy impacts. Recent grants support projects on North Atlantic right whale density modeling, spatial planning in the Indian Ocean, and high seas governance.
Research interests emphasize marine megavertebrate migrations, dynamic ocean management, and the ecological implications of marine infrastructure. Halpin’s publications highlight topics like low-impact-factor journals' policy influence and the role of built marine structures in conservation. His labs utilize advanced technologies like satellite tracking and AI for ocean observation systems.
