Darren Grem is an Associate Professor of History and Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi, affiliated with the Department of History and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture within the College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on 20th-century U.S. history, emphasizing the American South’s intersections of religion, capitalism, culture, and political dynamics. He holds a B.A. from Furman University (2001), and M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Georgia (2004, 2010). Postdoctoral fellowships at Yale and Emory preceded his current role.
Grem teaches courses on Southern history, U.S. religious history, modern politics, and the American Dream. His publications include The Blessings of Business (Oxford UP, 2016), analyzing corporate ties to conservative Christianity, and co-edited volumes such as The Business Turn in American Religious History (Oxford UP, 2017) and Southern Religion, Southern Culture (UP of Mississippi, 2019). His upcoming book Hard Times, USA examines post-WWII cultural memory of the Great Depression and New Deal.
His work bridges economic and religious history, exploring how business practices shaped modern religious movements. Courses span undergraduate and graduate levels, including seminars on Southern Studies, U.S. capitalism, and contemporary history.
