Judge Darrell Mavis has served as an Adjunct Professor at Southwestern Law School since 1996, teaching Trial Advocacy and the Art of Persuasion. He also teaches at USC Gould School of Law since 2015. As a Superior Court Judge of California since 2006, he has presided over over 100 jury trials and supervised 40 judges in multiple courthouses. His legal career includes 14 years as a prosecutor with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, handling high-profile cases like a DEA undercover operation resulting in double homicide charges. He holds a B.S. in Economics from MIT (1988), and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (1991).
His professional contributions include extensive judicial education work: faculty member of the B.E. Witkin Judicial College (2008-present), speaker at over 200 judicial education events, and Chair of the California Center for Judicial Education and Research Advisory Committee. He has authored multiple chapters on scientific evidence and consular notification in legal publications.
Judge Mavis has held leadership roles including past Chair of the California State Bar’s Criminal Law Section Executive Committee and member of the California Center for Judicial Education Governing Committee since 2014. His 2008 'Judge of the Year' award from the Constitutional Rights Foundation highlights his impactful career in legal education and criminal justice.
