Darrell J. Gaskin

Darrell J. Gaskin is the William C. and Nancy F. Richardson Professor in Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions and a leading expert in health economics and disparities research.

Dr. Gaskin earned his PhD from Johns Hopkins (1995), MS from MIT (1987), and BA from Brandeis University (1983). His research focuses on how contextual factors—such as race, poverty, neighborhood, and policy—shape access to care, quality, and health outcomes for vulnerable populations. He investigates the social determinants of health and develops policies to advance equity in health and well-being.

His recent publications (2020–2025) reveal a strong trend in analyzing structural inequities, including racial disparities in dementia burden, police violence, hospital readmission penalties, and the impact of social vulnerability and place on mortality. His work integrates health economics, epidemiology, and policy analysis to address systemic health disparities.

He leads multiple NIH-funded projects on health disparities, diabetes, and hypertension control. His work is widely cited and influences national health policy.
