Darko Preiner is a Professor at the Department of Viticulture and Enology within the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb. His work focuses on preserving and advancing Dalmatian native grapevine varieties through genetic research and sustainable viticulture practices.
Academic Background:
- Ph.D. (2006-2012): Mass Positive Selection Efficiency Within Populations Of Dalmatian Native Grapevine (V. Vinifera L.)
- M.Sc. (2000-2006): Ampelographic and genetic evaluation of mutant Plavac mali sivi (V. vinifera L.)
Research Expertise: Specializes in grapevine genetic resource conservation, ampelography, and breeding. His work integrates metabolomics, high-throughput phenotyping, and molecular markers for disease-resistant cultivar development. Current projects address climate adaptation in Croatian viticultural zones and cryopreservation of berry species.
Professional Recognition:
- Member of ECPGR Work Group Vitis (European Cooperative Programme for Plant Genetic Resources)
- Editorial Board, Agriculturae Conspectus Scientificus (2015–present)
- Commission member for sensory wine analysis and grapevine variety testing at Croatian Ministry of Agriculture (2011–present)
Teaching & Advisory: Coordinates 15+ national and EU-funded research projects including CroP-BioDiv (Biodiversity Center of Excellence) and CroViZone (climate adaptation). Supervises courses in ampelography, viticulture physiology, and world wines. International training includes UC Davis (Cochran Fellowship) and Nordic Genetic Resources Center.
Facilities: Leads research at the Division for Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, utilizing specialized labs for grapevine propagation and metabolomic analysis at the Fakultetsko dobro 10 facility.
