Dariusz Wanatowski

Professor Dariusz Wanatowski is a Professor of Geomechanics in the School of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Leeds, UK. He currently serves as Pro-Dean of the SWJTU-Leeds Joint School at Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, China, highlighting his leadership in international academic collaboration.

His educational background includes an MSc in Civil Engineering from Poznan University of Technology, Poland, a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Nottingham, UK.

Professor Wanatowski's research is centered on experimental geomechanics, with a focus on the mechanical behavior of granular soils. His work investigates strain softening, instability, strain localization, strength and stiffness anisotropy, and the effects of intermediate principal stress on soil behavior. These themes are critical in understanding soil failure mechanisms, especially in contexts like liquefaction and mining engineering. His expertise also extends to foundation design and engineering materials.

He holds prestigious professional recognitions including Chartered Engineer (CEng), Chartered Scientist (CSci), Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of Geotechnical Research, a Gold Open Access journal by the Institution of Civil Engineers, and serves as Associate Editor for Geomechanics and Geoengineering: An International Journal.

Professor Wanatowski has supervised numerous BEng, MEng, MSc, and PhD students throughout his career, demonstrating a strong commitment to education and mentorship. He has taught key civil engineering subjects such as soil mechanics and foundation design at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

He is actively involved in the international geotechnical community, serving on Technical Committees TC-208 (Stability of Natural Slopes) and TC-303 (Coastal and River Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). His professional memberships include the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (MIMMM), American Society of Civil Engineers (MASCE), British Geotechnical Association (BGA), and the Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society (SEAGS).
