Andrea Dominijanni

Andrea Dominijanni is an Associate Professor in the Department of Structural, Building and Geotechnical Engineering (DISEG) at the Polytechnic University of Turin, where he also earned his PhD in 2005. He teaches Advanced Geomechanics and Foundation Systems for the Master's Degree in Civil Engineering and leads the Environmental Geotechnics course in the Doctoral School. He serves as Chairman of the ISSMGE Technical Committee TC 215 on Environmental Geotechnics (2022–2026) and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Environmental Geotechnics.

His research focuses on environmental geotechnics, particularly contaminant transport in soils, characterization of bentonites, landfill barrier systems, and soil improvement via injections. His expertise spans numerical modeling, geosynthetics, and the chemical and hydraulic behavior of fine-grained soils. These interests align with key global challenges such as clean water, sustainable cities, and climate action (UN SDGs 6, 11, and 13).

The recent publications highlight a strong trend in understanding contaminant transport through engineered barriers, especially in landfills with defective geomembranes, and the osmotic and pore-scale behavior of bentonite-based barriers. His work combines experimental data with theoretical and numerical models to assess long-term performance and reliability of containment systems.
