Dario Papale

Dario Papale is an Associate Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of Tuscia (Viterbo, Italy). He holds a PhD in Forest Management and Ecology from the same institution (2003), focusing on artificial neural networks and eddy covariance data. His primary affiliation is with the Institute for Climate Resilience at the CMCC Foundation, where he leads research on ecosystem-scale greenhouse gas measurements and data-model integration.

Since 2004, he has been the scientific lead of the European Eddy Covariance fluxes databases cluster, advancing data standardization and quality control. He is a core member of the AmeriFlux Management Project Team and served as Director of the Ecosystem Thematic Centre of ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) in Europe since 2013. His work emphasizes global flux network development (FLUXNET) and improving measurement quality in Europe and the U.S.

With over 100 peer-reviewed papers and a co-edited book on eddy covariance techniques, his research bridges field measurements with empirical modeling to address climate change impacts on ecosystems. He is active in promoting open access and standardization in carbon observation systems, contributing to initiatives like ICOS and FLUXCOM-X.

Key collaborations include the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and leadership roles in global flux networks. His technical contributions include methodologies to reduce biases in eddy covariance data and partitioning transpiration/evaporation fluxes.
