Dr. Daphne James is an Associate Professor and Interim Head of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Newcastle. She specializes in Medical Radiation Science with over 30 years of clinical and academic experience in nuclear medicine. Her research focuses on occupational health risks for medical radiation practitioners, including radiation exposure effects and burnout prevention. She has held leadership roles such as Assistant Dean (Teaching and Learning) and Program Convenor for the Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science program.
Education: PhD (Medical Radiation Science, University of Newcastle, 2015); Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (University of Newcastle).
Research Interests: Radiation safety protocols, musculoskeletal health in academic settings, and evidence-based practice in medical imaging. She has published extensively on pregnancy screening protocols in nuclear medicine and workforce wellbeing.
Recent publications highlight organizational challenges in nuclear medicine technologist wellbeing and the diagnostic accuracy of imaging techniques. Awards include the ANZSNM Dr Elizabeth Bailey Award for contributions to nuclear medicine.
Grants: Over $1.9M in funding for projects like digital health interventions and VR education tools. Supervised 8 completed and 1 current PhD/Master’s students focusing on topics like emotional intelligence in healthcare and radiation exposure risks.
