Danuta R Shanzer is a Professor of Classics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the School of Literatures, Cultures & Linguistics and the Department of Classics. Her research focuses on Late Roman and Early Medieval Latin literature, philology, and social history, with expertise in textual criticism, paleography, and church history.
Her current projects include critical editions of texts like Rutilius Namatianus’s Torino Fragments and Chilperic’s Verse, studies on eschatology, Boethius’ literary legacy, and the intersection of church doctrine with social practices. She also collaborates on translations of early medieval documents, including works by Desiderius of Cahors.
Dr. Shanzer’s research bridges classical and medieval studies, examining themes such as the classical tradition’s influence on early Christian thought, legal and social structures in Late Antiquity, and the development of medieval theological concepts. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining philological rigor with historical and cultural analysis.
Her collaborative efforts include co-editing conference proceedings on Romans, Barbarians, and the Transformation of the Roman World. She has also contributed to the TTH series with a translation of 7th-century documents.
