Daniele Morrone is a Research Fellow at KU Leuven’s De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy, currently holding an FWO Fellowship since November 2024. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Jan Opsomer’s ERC Project PlatoViaAristotle (2022–2024) and as a postdoctoral researcher in Matteo Martelli’s ERC AlchemEast project. He holds a PhD from the University of Bologna (2022) and degrees from Sapienza University of Rome (BA 2016, MA 2018).
His research integrates traditional philological methods with digital tools like TheSu XML, focusing on ancient natural philosophy (especially Middle Platonism and Aristotelianism), proto-chemical theories, and the role of analogical thinking in scientific constructions. Key interests include the intersection of ancient philosophy with experimental archaeology, particularly in metallurgical practices and material science.
Recent work explores Plutarch’s scientific terminology, color classification systems, and symbolic use of natural phenomena in religious contexts. Publications span 20+ peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with contributions to journals like Early Science and Medicine and PHYSIS. He co-developed TheSu XML, an annotation schema for mapping intellectual discourse in historical texts.
Grants include FWO Fellowship (2024–present) and ERC project participations. His current project advances digital humanities methodologies while investigating lead/lead white in Greco-Roman sources through interdisciplinary chemical-historical analysis. Teaching contributions include seminars on ancient cosmology and Plutarch’s philosophy at KU Leuven.
