Education
- Ph.D. in Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- M.S. in Biology, Bowling Green State University
- B.S. in Biology, St. Thomas Aquinas College
Research Focus
Dr. Welsh's research examines two interconnected themes in fish biology: 1) Breeding behavior including spawning strategies and reproductive tactics, and 2) Adaptation mechanisms across habitats through behavioral, morphological, and physiological changes. His work specifically targets non-model fish species to address knowledge gaps in ichthyology.
Publications Overview
Recent publications (2011-2023) demonstrate consistent focus on ecological adaptations in fish. Key themes include: community responses to urbanization, evolution of reproductive traits, morphological variations across populations, and condition-dependent life history strategies. Research employs field observations, morphological analyses, and behavioral experiments across diverse aquatic systems.
Laboratory Activities
The Welsh Lab conducts research on fish biology and adaptation. While specific projects aren't detailed in available materials, the lab likely offers opportunities for student involvement in investigating behavioral ecology and phenotypic responses to environmental factors.
