معرفی
Daniel Weix is the Wayland E. Noland Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He leads the Weix Group, a multidisciplinary team investigating new catalytic reactions for organic synthesis, with labs located on the 5th floor of Shain Tower.
Education
- B.A. 2000, Columbia University (Chemistry)
- Ph.D. 2005, University of California, Berkeley (with Prof. Jonathan Ellman)
- Postdoc 2005–2006, Yale University (with Prof. John Hartwig)
- Postdoc 2006–2008, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (with Prof. John Hartwig)
Research Interests
Prof. Weix’s program centers on conceptually new catalytic methods that merge mechanistic organometallic chemistry with practical synthetic utility. Current emphases include:
- Cross-electrophile coupling of two different electrophiles (aryl halides, alkyl halides, acid chlorides, enones, epoxides, etc.)
- Radical–transition-metal cooperative catalysis
- First-row transition-metal catalysis (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu)
- Multimetallic catalytic cycles
- Mechanistic elucidation to inspire new reaction design
Recent Publication Trends
Between 2023 and 2025, the Weix lab has published prolifically (>35 articles) on nickel- and cobalt-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling, electrochemical variants, photoredox/metallaphotoredox hybrids, and the fundamental mechanistic understanding that underpins these transformations. Key themes include expanding substrate scope to challenging heteroarenes and sterically hindered partners, translating reactions into non-amide solvents, and leveraging computational guidance for ligand discovery.
Students & Teams
The Weix Group currently comprises 10 graduate students, 2 postdoctoral researchers, and 5 undergraduate researchers. Graduate students are drawn from top programs nationwide and receive integrated training in organic synthesis and organometallic mechanism. Weekly group meetings, safety seminars, and outreach activities foster a collaborative environment.
