Daniel Vlahos

Daniel Vlahos is a Boston-based Senior Lecturer in English and Media Studies at Bentley University and serves as President of AIGA Boston. His interdisciplinary design practice spans graphic communication, dynamic media, and community engagement. As a founding member of Design Museum Boston (now CoDesign Collaborative) and member of the Boston Society of Printers, he bridges academic and professional design communities.

His research explores Design and Community, Interdisciplinarity and Complexity, and Dynamic Media and Motion. Vlahos examines how design can address urban justice through projects like Youth Design (2003-2017), which served Boston public high school students, and Mission Hill Arts Festival branding that expanded urban arts access. His work integrates sustainability principles with creative entrepreneurship, evidenced in projects like Climate Data Vital Signs web applications and sustainable design awareness posters.

Recent publications demonstrate evolving focus from automotive branding (Volkswagen 'Drivers Wanted', 2005) to contemporary explorations of design epistemology in Towards a Dynamic Discipline of Design (2021) and audiovisual pedagogy integration (2021). His articles increasingly address climate communication, community health visualization, and interdisciplinary design education frameworks.

Professional recognition includes honors from AIGA, The One Club, Print, How, and Interactive Media Council. His public installations include the Portal to Elliot Concord River Preserve lenticular artwork at Bentley University and LEED Silver Pavilion glass patterns developed with architect Michael Joyce.

Vlahos maintains active industry engagement through Dan Vlahos Design studio, consulting on architectural marketing, wayfinding systems, and institutional rebranding for entities like Shepley Bulfinch and MassArt. His educational leadership extends to developing motion design pedagogy using The Queen's Gambit title sequences and creating critique tools like Critiquemate for design education.
