Daniel Unterweger serves as Junior Professor for Intestinal Microbiology at Kiel University, holding dual affiliations with the Institute for Experimental Medicine (IEM) and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology (MPI). His research group investigates bacterial evolution within host environments using advanced imaging, murine models, and molecular techniques.
His primary research focuses on bacterial adaptation during chronic inflammation and therapeutic restoration of ancestral bacterial states. Key specialties include Intestinal Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology, Bacterial genetics, Evolutionary Medicine, and Microbiome dynamics, with emphasis on host-pathogen interactions in inflammatory diseases.
As principal investigator for DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center project 10 (Bacterial evolution during chronic inflammation and its potential for ancestral state restorative therapy), he leads Phase 1 research while collaborating on Phase 2 project P7 with Professors Baines and Hövener. This multi-institutional effort involves Kiel University, Research Center Borstel, Helmholtz Zentrum München, MPI, and University of Lübeck.
