Research Interests focus on the interplay between steroid hormones (e.g., estrogens/testosterone) and complex social behaviors. His work spans neuroendocrinology, neuroethology, and hormonal regulation of motivation and reward-seeking behavior. At St. Mary's, he investigates how steroid hormones facilitate woodpecker drumming—a high-frequency non-vocal auditory communication—and the neurophysiological mechanisms protecting the brain from trauma during this behavior.
Recent Research Trends emphasize cross-species comparisons of the social decision-making network, examining how hormonal activation produces diverse behavioral outputs. Current projects analyze neurophysiological adaptations supporting high-impact social signaling in avian species.
