Daniel Thewes is a Researcher at the University of Hamburg and the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ). He earned his M.Sc. in Physical Oceanography (2016) and Ph.D. in Marine Environmental Sciences (2020) from the University of Hamburg and Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, respectively. His work focuses on ocean light climate modeling, eutrophication, and biogeochemical interactions in coastal ecosystems.
- Doctor of Natural Sciences (University of Oldenburg, 2020)
- M.Sc. Physical Oceanography (University of Hamburg, 2016)
- B.Sc. Geophysics/Oceanography (University of Hamburg, 2013)
Thewes’s research explores how changing light availability impacts coastal biodiversity and ecosystem health under climate change. His 3D numerical models integrate satellite data and in-situ measurements to refine predictions about nutrient dynamics and biogeochemical thresholds in the North Sea and Wadden Sea.
His publications and presentations highlight trends in transboundary environmental modeling, light-climate adaptation, and coastal eutrophication analysis. He actively contributes to the OSPAR ICG-EMO working group, advancing model comparisons for marine policy thresholds.
Thewes has presented at international conferences including the International Workshop on Modeling the Ocean and Ocean Science Meeting. He previously served as a tutor in physics and mathematics at the University of Hamburg’s Institute of Geophysics.
