Mathias Zeller is a postdoctoral research fellow at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, affiliated with the Biogeochemical Modelling unit under the Marine Biogeochemistry research division. His work focuses on climate variability, numerical modeling, and interactions between physical and biogeochemical ocean processes.
- Education:
- Ph.D. (2016–2019) - School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment, Monash University
- M.Sc. (2013–2015) - Integrated Climate System Science, University of Hamburg
- B.Sc. (2010–2013) - Physical Oceanography, University of Hamburg
Zeller’s research spans tropical Pacific decadal variability, Southern Ocean dynamics, and climate modeling using coupled and ocean-only systems. He investigates seasonal-to-multi-decadal climate patterns and the influence of oceanic interactions on ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation). His recent projects include the Humboldt Tipping (Phase 2) and PalMod (Phase 2) initiatives, both funded by Germany’s BMBF.
Zeller has co-supervised M.Sc. theses and tutored advanced geophysical fluid dynamics and data analysis courses. He has contributed to studies on Southern Ocean circulation biases, spiciness anomalies in the Pacific, and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation predictability.
Research Grants:
- Associate Investigator, Humboldt Tipping (2023–2025)
- Associate Investigator, PalMod (2020–2023)
