Dr. Daniel Smith is a Senior Research Associate at the University of East Anglia (UEA), affiliated with the School of Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. He currently leads the SOC - Southern Ocean Clouds project, focusing on improving numerical weather prediction and climate models for Southern Ocean cloud representation. His career includes roles as a Data Scientist at WeatherQuest Ltd (2021–present) and a Postgraduate Researcher at UEA (2015–2020). He holds a BSc in Natural Sciences from UEA (2010–2013) and an MSc in Atmosphere-Ocean Dynamics from the University of Leeds (2014–2015).
His research interests span numerical weather prediction, fog modeling, climate dynamics, and atmospheric processes. Notable projects include LANFEX fog experiments and collaborations with institutions like the Natural Environment Research Council and the Met Office. His recent work addresses fog forecasting in India, urban climate modeling, and climate projections for viticulture.
Key contributions include advancements in fog dynamics understanding and model improvements. He has been involved in three active or completed research projects, including OFRAM (orographic flow studies) and FOGGI (fog follow-on initiatives).
His research outputs span climatology, meteorology, and environmental science, with a focus on applied atmospheric dynamics and climate impacts.
