Education:
- MDesSc(SustDes), University of Sydney
- BArch, National University of Ireland, Dublin
- BSc, National University of Ireland, Dublin
- PhD, University of Sydney (2017)
Research Interests: Ryan explores how architectural design interacts with climatic conditions, particularly in tropical and non-temperate zones. His work examines historical case studies like Australia’s Climate and House Design Program (1944–1960), colonial architectural practices, and the visualization of climatic elements. He emphasizes decolonizing architectural methodologies and sustainable design principles.
Publications Trends: Ryan’s publications span edited books (e.g., .Drawing Climate), journal articles, and conference papers. His work often critiques historical approaches to thermal comfort and advocates for context-specific architectural solutions. Recent focus areas include thermal nationalism, tropical modernism, and the Anthropocene’s impact on architectural design.
Grants and Awards:
- 2022: 'Climatic Imaginaries Exhibition' grant with Sydney Environment Institute
Labs & Collaborations: Ryan collaborates with the Sydney Environment Institute on interdisciplinary projects linking architecture to climate resilience. His research often involves visualizing invisible climatic factors through innovative drawing techniques and historical analysis.
