Dr. Daniel Rhodes is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Stirling, affiliated with the National Trust for Scotland. His work focuses on heritage engagement, colonial archaeology, and the intersection of history and urban development. He has conducted research in Scotland, East Africa, and other regions, emphasizing community access to heritage and the socio-economic impacts of cultural landscapes.
His research explores contested heritages in colonial contexts, particularly in Tanzania, Kenya, and Sudan, comparing German and British colonial urban designs with Swahili traditions. He also studies Scotland’s historic buildings and landscapes, such as Newhailes and Gladstone’s Land, highlighting their roles in Enlightenment-era social theater and medieval urbanism.
Rhodes’ publications span archaeology, historical conservation, and heritage management. Notable works include analyses of Suakin’s colonial heritage in Sudan and Stone Town Zanzibar’s maritime archaeology. His research bridges global north-south dynamics and contemporary tourism practices.
Affiliated with the Heritage Centre for Environment, Heritage and Policy (CEHP), he advocates for inclusive heritage practices and uses archaeology to address contested historical narratives. His work emphasizes accessibility, ensuring heritage resources benefit diverse audiences.
