Daniel R. Coquillette is the J. Donald Monan, S.J. University Professor at Boston College and the Charles Warren Visiting Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School. His academic career includes roles as Dean of Boston College Law School (1985–1993) and law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Warren E. Burger. He specializes in legal history, professional responsibility, and the history of legal education.
Education: A.B. from Williams College (1966), M.A. from Oxford University (1969), and J.D. from Harvard Law School (1971). His research focuses on American legal history, particularly Harvard Law School’s development, and ethical challenges in legal practice.
Research interests include the intersection of law and morality, the evolution of legal pedagogy, and institutional history. His publications, such as On the Battlefield of Merit and Real Ethics for Real Lawyers, highlight his contributions to legal scholarship. He has held leadership roles in professional ethics committees and is a Senior Editor of Moore’s Federal Practice.
Professional activities include advising the American Law Institute and serving on ethics committees for the American Bar Association. His work emphasizes the ethical dimensions of legal practice and the historical foundations of legal systems.
