Professor Daniel P. Siewiorek is the Buhl University Professor of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He has designed 20 generations of mobile computing systems, contributed to over 400 papers, and authored eight influential textbooks in computer architecture and reliable computing. As Director of the Human Computer Interaction Institute and former Director of the Engineering Design Research Center, he has shaped academic and research initiatives at CMU.
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, University of Michigan (1968)
- M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (minor in Computer Science), Stanford University (1969, 1972)
His research spans computer architecture, wearable computing, and human-computer interaction, with a focus on dependability design and multiprocessor systems. He pioneered the Cm* project, leading to a 50-processor multiprocessor system, and has been instrumental in advancing fault-tolerant computing and design automation.
Scientific awards include:
- 2018 Taylor L. Booth Education Award: Recognizing contributions to education through textbooks, mentoring, and leadership.
- 1988 Eckert-Mauchly Award: Honoring achievements in parallel computer architecture and reliability.
Dr. Siewiorek has served as Associate Editor for ACM's Communications, chaired IEEE Technical Committees on Fault-Tolerant Computing and Wearable Information Systems, and advised numerous commercial/government organizations. He co-founded the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems and remains a Fellow of the ACM.
