Daniel Newman is Professor in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University, with affiliations to the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.
His research encompasses Arab food history (9th-15th centuries), Arabic geographical/travel literature, erotology in medieval Islam, translation history in the Arab world, and the Tunisian/Egyptian Nahda movements. He has published critical editions and translations of medieval Arabic culinary manuscripts and travelogues.
Publications explore cultural encounters in Arab travel writing, lexicographic evolution during the Nahda, and gastronomy in Islamic societies. Recent works include 'The Exile’s Cookbook' (2023) and 'Gourmet Gastronomic Culture in Islamic Lands' (2023).
Awards include Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (2021), Humboldt Research Award (2012), and co-recipient of Tunisia's World Award for Islamic Studies (2009).
