Daniel Messelken is a Research Fellow at the University of Zurich's Department of Philosophy and leads the Zurich Center for Military Medical Ethics. His work bridges military ethics, medical ethics, and the tradition of Just War Theory, focusing on ethical dilemmas in armed conflict and austere environments.
His research explores medical neutrality, impartiality in wartime healthcare, and the moral implications of technological advancements in military medicine. He has co-edited volumes on topics like Challenging Medical Neutrality and Resource Scarcity in Austere Environments, emphasizing ethical frameworks for complex scenarios.
Recent publications analyze the incompatibility of conflict logic with medicine, ethical triage protocols, and the duty to care during epidemics. His work is grounded in interdisciplinary collaborations with institutions such as the Competence Center for Military & Disaster Medicine and the Ethics Center.
Messelken studied political science, philosophy, and French studies at the University of Leipzig and in Paris. He has held research and leadership roles in military medical ethics since 2006, including editorial contributions to Springer publications.
