Research Interests: Meckel’s research delves into psychological anthropology, cultural psychoanalysis, and ethnopsychology in the Hindu Himalayas. He examines how Hindu cultural frameworks shape concepts of emotion, family dynamics, and healing. His work challenges Western-centric psychoanalytic theories, advocating for culturally contextualized interpretations of the psyche.
Labs/Teams: His fieldwork in the Himalayan village of Anidasu has been central to his studies, focusing on family structures and the applicability of psychoanalytic thought in non-Western contexts. He also explores how local conceptions of mental health, such as depression, differ from Western psychiatric frameworks.
