Daniel Martin Watterson, PhD, is the John G. Searle Professor of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he also serves as a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. He focuses on eukaryotic signal transduction pathways and their roles in neurologic disorders, cancer, and inflammatory diseases.
His research leverages genetic, informatic, and pharmacological approaches to develop novel therapeutic candidates. Current projects include optimizing small molecules for neurologic disorders, exploring preclinical treatments for depressive disorders, and validating therapies for gastrointestinal and pulmonary tissue barrier dysfunctions.
- Education: PhD in Biochemistry from Emory University (1975), Postgraduate Training in Bioorganic Chemistry at Duke University.
Recent publications highlight his work on 5-HT2b inhibitors for Alzheimer's and neuropsychiatric disorders, PI3Kγ signaling in tumor inflammation, and anti-inflammatory drug candidates for neurodegenerative conditions. His research spans molecular biology, neuroscience, and translational medicine.
- Scientific Awards:
- National Academy of Inventors Fellow (2022)
- Melvin R. Goodes Prize for Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery
- Elan Award for Innovative Alzheimer’s Therapeutics
With 39 patents to his name, Watterson's work bridges academic innovation and clinical application, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases and cancer biology. He actively collaborates with multidisciplinary teams and maintains leadership roles in major professional societies.
