Daniel Maroti is a Researcher at the Department of Psychology, Stockholm University, where he is affiliated with the Stockholm University research group for Process and Outcome in Psychodynamic therapies (SU-POP). In addition to his academic role, he works as a clinical psychologist within Region Stockholm.
His primary research interests include:
- Process and outcome in psychodynamic therapy across multiple delivery formats
- Patients with long-term physical symptoms where psychological factors play a significant role
- Trauma and its physiological and psychological effects
- Emotion-focused therapeutic approaches for treating both physical and psychological symptoms
- Functional somatic syndromes (including irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia)
- Medically unexplained symptoms such as chronic primary pain
Maroti's work challenges conventional approaches that focus primarily on patient cognition, instead emphasizing how traumatic experiences can fundamentally affect both body and mind. His research examines how emotion-focused methods can influence the nervous system and address the connection between psychological trauma and physical symptoms.
His current research project 'Emotion-focused digital interventions for patients with medically unexplained symptoms' addresses a significant healthcare challenge, as patients with these conditions make approximately 14 times more doctor visits than the general population despite reporting lower satisfaction with care received.
Maroti's dual role as both researcher and practicing clinical psychologist provides him with valuable clinical insights to inform his academic work, creating a strong research-practice connection in the field of psychosomatic medicine and trauma-informed care.
