Prof. Daniel Longley is a Professor and Director of the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research at Queen’s University Belfast. His research focuses on cancer therapy response and resistance, particularly investigating the roles of FLIP and IAP proteins in apoptosis regulation. His work has led to clinical trials of IAP inhibitors in colorectal cancer and the development of first-in-class FLIP inhibitors licensed to Ipsen Pharma in 2021. He co-founded AilseVax, a cancer vaccine spin-out company.
Key affiliations include the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences and leadership in projects like the Future Medicines Institute and CURED Study. His research spans molecular mechanisms of cancer resistance, drug development, and translational oncology.
Research interests emphasize apoptosis pathways, therapeutic targets in colorectal cancer, and drug combination strategies. Recent articles highlight advancements in protein profiling, ribosome quality control, and spatial proteomics in cancer subtyping. Projects include collaborations on high-parameter flow cytometry and TRAIL-R2 complex regulation.
Grants and partnerships include Wellcome Trust funding (£10M) and industry collaborations. His work contributes to Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
