Daniel Johansson is a Professor and Head of Subject in Mining and Rock Engineering at Luleå University of Technology, Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, where he leads research in the Mining and Geotechnical Engineering division. His office is located in Luleå at T3353, and he can be reached at daniel.johansson@ltu.se or by phone at 0920-492361.
Dr. Johansson earned his PhD in Rock Engineering and Rock Mechanics in 2011 with a thesis titled 'Effects of confinement and initiation delay on fragmentation and waste rock compaction - Results from small-scale tests,' supervised by Prof. Finn Ouchterlony. He previously obtained a Licentiate Degree in the same field in 2008 and an MSc in Civil Engineering with specialization in Rock Engineering in 2003.
His research spans multiple critical areas in mining and rock engineering, including detonation physics of civil explosives, energy partitioning in rock blasting, shock wave interactions in rock fragmentation, and sub-level caving blast optimization. He actively investigates the curvature of detonation fronts, work capacity of explosives in coupled conditions, and toxic fume production from blasting operations. His work combines experimental design, field testing, and numerical modeling to address complex challenges in mining operations, particularly focusing on how geological properties affect blast damage and how to optimize blast effects on downstream mining processes.
Dr. Johansson's recent publications demonstrate his expertise in nonideal detonation phenomena, blast-induced crack propagation, and gravity flow simulation in sub-level caving systems. His research shows a consistent focus on improving understanding of fundamental rock blasting mechanisms while addressing practical mining challenges through both experimental and computational approaches.
His work involves significant collaboration through the Swedish Blasting Research Centre (Swebrec), where he contributes to advancing knowledge in rock engineering and blasting technology. His research has direct applications for improving mining efficiency, safety, and environmental performance, particularly in northern mining operations where Luleå University of Technology has strong industry connections.
