Takis Katsabanis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mining Engineering at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. He is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario and a member of the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE).
He received his BSc from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and his MASc (Eng.) and PhD degrees from Queen's University.
Dr. Katsabanis specializes in blasting and explosives engineering, with research focusing on fragmentation, fracture propagation in rock, blast damage, and explosives performance/sensitivity. His work integrates:
- Small-scale fragmentation testing with numerical modeling
- High strain-rate material property analysis via Hopkinson Bar tests
- Blast damage modeling and grinding/crushing effects
- Explosives sensitivity, desensitization, and fume production studies
Dr. Katsabanis has authored numerous technical papers and taught continuing education courses globally. His research is supported by industry collaborations and Queen's University resources.
He directs experimental work at Queen's Explosives Laboratory—an off-campus facility with blasting chambers for investigations into dust explosibility, detonator malfunctions, sympathetic detonation, explosive calorimetry, shock characterization, vibration control, and airblast phenomena.
