Professor Daniel Esser is affiliated with American University, holding roles as Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies and Faculty Fellow at the Metropolitan Policy Center. He earned a PhD in Development Studies and an MSc in Development Management (Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
His research focuses on international development effectiveness, political conflicts in fragile states (e.g., Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mozambique), urban governance in conflict zones, and the political economy of learning in bilateral aid organizations. He has also investigated global health governance, spatial inequality, and transdisciplinary approaches to development policy.

Professor Esser has directed the SIS Olson Scholars program and taught in American University's Honors program. His grants include funding from Canada's IDRC, the UK's ESRC, Mellon-MIT, Studienstiftung, and DAAD. As a consultant, he has advised the World Bank, OECD, USAID, and others on program planning and multi-million donor portfolio evaluations.
He previously served as an International Civil Servant with UNESCAP (Bangkok) and UNDP (New York) from 2006–08. He currently serves as Associate Editor of Oxford Development Studies and contributed to the AAG's Development Geographies Specialty Group as past-Chair (2021–23).
His work connects global development frameworks with local governance challenges, emphasizing accountability and learning in aid organizations. He collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and engages in public policy dialogues through his research and media consultations.
