Susan Brewer-Osorio is an Assistant Professor of Latin American Studies at the University of Arizona, with a joint appointment in the School of Government & Public Policy. She is affiliated with the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and has held prior academic roles at Hobart & William Smith Colleges and the College of William & Mary. Her work focuses on conflict dynamics, peacebuilding, and resistance to militarized drug policies in Latin America.
Dr. Brewer-Osorio earned her Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 2014. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in Colombia, examining grassroots peacebuilding and reintegration of former combatants, particularly through a collective approach. She collaborates with researchers at the Universidad EAFIT on gender dimensions of ex-combatant reintegration and directs a study abroad program in Colombia.
Her research interests include comparative politics, Latin American governance, and security studies. She employs qualitative methods like interviews and direct observation to analyze societal impacts of conflict and policy interventions.
- Awards: Udall Center Fellowship (2023-24), U.S. Fulbright Scholar (2021), IPRAF Peace Research Grant, and SSRC DSD Fellowship (2011).
In advising and grants, she has directed the Security and Peacebuilding study abroad program and secured grants supporting her research on drug policies and peacebuilding. Professional affiliations include the Udall Center and CLAS, emphasizing policy and regional studies.
