Dr. Daniel Commane is an Associate Professor in the Applied Sciences Department at Northumbria University. He holds a PhD in Nutrition from Ulster University (2004) and a PGCert in Academic Practice from the University of Reading (2014). His research focuses on dietary interventions, gut microbiota, and functional foods, particularly prebiotics and probiotics. He is currently accepting PhD students in areas such as dietary intervention studies, diet and cancer, and gut microbiota research.
His work explores the anti-carcinogenic mechanisms of pre- and probiotics, the effects of meat substitution on health biomarkers, and the role of dietary glycans in gut microbiome interactions. Recent studies include randomized controlled trials on mycoprotein’s impact on genotoxicity and cardiovascular risk, as well as modeling dietary meat replacement in UK populations.
Dr. Commane has authored 25 peer-reviewed publications and actively participates in academic events, such as the Northumbria University Experience Day (2024). His research has been widely cited and covered by media outlets, with studies receiving attention for their implications on public health and food science.
