Professor Kieran Tuohy serves as Professor of Energy Metabolism and Microbiome within the Faculty of Environment at the University of Leeds, where his work bridges nutritional science and microbiome research to investigate diet-health relationships.
His academic foundation includes:
- PhD from University of Surrey (2000)
- MSc in Environmental Microbiology from University of Aberdeen (1995)
- BSc in Industrial Microbiology from University College Dublin, Ireland (1993)
His research centers on gut microbiota dynamics, examining how probiotics, prebiotics, and fermented foods modulate host-microbe interactions. He investigates dietary interventions for metabolic health, with emphasis on cholesterol management through microbiome modulation and sustainable food system development.
Professor Tuohy leads significant research initiatives including the National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre (NAPIC), SusProFood project optimizing plant-protein fortified functional foods, and synbiotic studies targeting ketogenic diet side effects.
