Daniel Choquet is a Research Director at CNRS affiliated with University of Bordeaux, where he serves as Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Neuroscience (UMR 5297 CNRS-Université Bordeaux Segalen), Director of the Bordeaux Imaging Center (UMS 3420 CNRS-University of Bordeaux-INSERM), and Director of the Excellence Cluster BRAIN (Bordeaux Région Aquitaine Initiative for Neuroscience). His interdisciplinary work bridges neuroscience, cell biology, and advanced imaging techniques, making significant contributions to understanding synaptic function and receptor dynamics.
His educational background includes:
- 1997: Habilitation à diriger des recherches, Bordeaux University
- 1994-1996: Sabbatical at Duke University (N.C., USA) as an EMBO Fellow
- 1990: Post-doctoral work at Irvine University (CA, USA) under Pr. M. Cahalan
- 1988: PhD from Paris VI University, Pharmacology, Institut Pasteur
- 1984: Engineering Diploma from Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures de Paris
Choquet's research program has evolved from early work on patch clamp electrophysiology to pioneering studies in single molecule and super-resolution imaging of neurotransmitter receptors. His laboratory has made fundamental contributions to understanding AMPA receptor trafficking, synaptic plasticity mechanisms, and the role of adhesion proteins in synapse organization. His work integrates cellular physiology, molecular neuroscience, and cutting-edge imaging methodologies to investigate how neurons communicate at the molecular level and how these processes are altered in neurological disorders.
Daniel Choquet has received numerous prestigious honors throughout his career:
- 2014: Member of EMBO
- 2013 & 2009: Advanced ERC grants from the European commission
- 2012: Chevalier de l'ordre national des Palmes Académiques
- 2011: Victoire de la medecine prize
- 2010: Member of the French Academy of Sciences
- 2009: Silver Medal from the CNRS
- 2007: Bauer Lectureship award, Brandeis University
- 2004: Grand prix from the French Academy of Sciences
- 1997-1990: Multiple early-career awards including CNRS Bronze Medal
Dr. Choquet has secured substantial research funding, including multiple European Research Council Advanced Grants, and has mentored numerous researchers throughout his career. His leadership extends to directing major research facilities and serving on international scientific advisory boards including the Human Frontier Science Program Council of Scientists and the ICeMS scientific advisory board in Kyoto.
Choquet directs an integrated neuroscience research ecosystem in Bordeaux comprising the Institute for Interdisciplinary Neuroscience, the Bordeaux Imaging Center core facility, and the LabEx BRAIN initiative. These institutions provide state-of-the-art infrastructure for cellular and molecular neuroscience research, with particular strength in advanced imaging technologies. Under his leadership, Bordeaux has become a significant European center for neuroscience research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across multiple institutions and scientific disciplines.
