Daniel Byman is a professor at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and director of the Security Studies Program, as well as director of the Warfare, Irregular Threats, and Terrorism Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He serves as the foreign policy editor for Lawfare and has held significant advisory roles including with the Department of State's International Security Advisory Board.
Byman earned his PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology following undergraduate studies at Amherst College. His career spans prestigious institutions including the Brookings Institution, RAND Corporation, U.S. intelligence community, and the 9/11 Commission. His expertise covers terrorism, insurgency, intelligence, artificial intelligence applications in security, and Middle Eastern affairs with specific regional focus on Egypt and the Levant, North Africa, Syria, the Gulf, and Iran.
As a prolific scholar, Byman has authored nine books including 'Spreading Hate: The Global Rise of White Supremacist Terrorism' (2022) and 'Road Warriors: Foreign Fighters in the Armies of Jihad' (2019), along with nearly 200 academic and policy publications. His research bridges academic rigor and policy relevance, frequently appearing in major media outlets including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.
Recent work demonstrates his continued engagement with pressing security challenges, with numerous 2025 publications analyzing the Israel-Hamas conflict, U.S. counterterrorism policy, irregular warfare evolution, and trends in political violence. His scholarship consistently examines both jihadist and right-wing terrorism while addressing contemporary security dilemmas through empirical analysis and policy recommendations.
