Dr. Daniel A. Beard is the Carl J. Wiggers Collegiate Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of Michigan, with primary appointments in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology and affiliate roles in Biomedical Engineering, Emergency Medicine, and Internal Medicine. His research focuses on systems engineering approaches to cardiovascular physiology, integrating computational modeling with experimental studies to unravel biophysical and biochemical mechanisms in heart and skeletal muscle function.
- Education: MS in Applied Mathematics (University of Washington), PhD in Bioengineering (University of Washington, 1997)
- Postdoctoral Training: Courant Institute of New York University, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Fellow
Research interests span three core areas:
- Cardiac energy metabolism: Discovering feedback mechanisms in mitochondrial ATP synthesis, particularly inorganic phosphate's role in heart failure.
- Oxidative metabolism in skeletal muscle: Investigating glucose disposal regulation in type II diabetes and its metabolic dysfunctions.
- Coronary blood flow: Analyzing multi-scale vascular signaling and sympathetic innervation effects in myocardial perfusion.
Recent publications highlight his lab's work in computational modeling, mitochondrial dysfunction in heart failure, AI-driven diagnostics, and vascular signaling. His lab is affiliated with the Samuel and Jean Frankel Cardiovascular Center, Weil Institute for Critical Care Research, and the MM-PKUHSC Joint Institute.
- Scientific Awards: 2025 Endowment for Basic Sciences Award.
- Education and Career: Trained under Dr. James Bassingthwaighte at the University of Washington, former Professor at Medical College of Wisconsin.
