Her research dismantles imperial narratives through analysis of British literature from the long nineteenth century, Victorian children's literature, and postcolonial perspectives. Dr. Shaaban's book project Shahrazad's Legacies: Golden Age Children's Literature and The Arabian Nights demonstrates how The Arabian Nights fundamentally shaped Victorian children's literature, challenging Eurocentric models of cultural influence. She actively participates in the “Undisciplining Victorian studies” movement to expand canonical boundaries.
Her publication “The Muslim ‘Other’ in Nineteenth-Century British Literature” analyzes representations of Islam in Victorian texts while providing practical curriculum tools for inclusive teaching. This work synthesizes postcolonial theory with historical analysis to address gaps in American literature pedagogy regarding Middle Eastern voices.
